Project Overview

Projecta Jovem, also known as the Decent Work for Youth in Mozambique (DW4YM) project, endeavors to foster decent work and enhance employment prospects for the youth in the northern regions of the country, specifically in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa, and Nampula.

The project interventions will be guided by the achievement of two main objectives.

1. To increase the participation of youth, particularly women and people with disabilities in the labour market by improving the workforce for agricultural infrastructure and short-term employment opportunities. The project is also implementing trainings delivered in collaboration with TVET centers that will facilitate the employability of these young people.

2. To secure market linkages with aggregators of agricultural and fisheries products, including buyers from the hospitality industry. This will involve the modernization and/or development of integrated agribusiness centers with the aim of generating greater bargaining power for local producers in value chains. The project will support the establishment of work-based learning programs in the agriculture, artisanal fisheries, and aquaculture sectors, as well as training in entrepreneurship and business development.

We work with an integrated approach to meet the needs and challenges of vulnerable youth in the north of the country, while promoting concrete job opportunities. We focus on developing technical and entrepreneurial skills, enabling project beneficiaries to find economic opportunities primarily in the areas of agriculture, construction, and aquaculture.

GEOGRAPHICAL AREA AND SECTORIAL FOCUS

Cabo Delgado has an area of 82.625 km² and a population of 2.333.278 inhabitants. The tourism sector presents a range of opportunities for local economic and social development, mainly in Pemba and the Quirimbas archipelago. Currently, investments linked to the exploration of natural gas herald the resumption of activities in this sector, generating new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.

Niassa covers an area of approximately 122.000 Km 2 , being the largest province in the country and has a population of just over one million people. The province is rich in such natural resources and is considered extremely fertile, with extensive untapped agricultural potential due to difficult accessibility and the absence of support infrastructure. In addition, the region also suffers from a lack of skilled labor to enhance production systems.

Nampula is the most populous province in the country and is known for its cultural diversity. The province has a variety of natural resources, including coal, gas, and minerals, and has great economic potential with respect to agriculture, primarily cashew nut, cotton, and tobacco production. In addition, it is also home to the Nacala Corridor, an important transport route connecting Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique to the Indian Ocean.
